MEET OUR SPEAKER

DR RICHARD SWANNELL
International Development Director, WRAP

Richard is committed to working on ways of reducing man’s impact on the environment. A biochemist by training, he has a strong expertise in delivering more resource efficient and sustainable practices within businesses. He is International Development Director of WRAP - a UK charity, at the forefront of the circular economy - thought leaders, champions of action and catalysts for change, working in 25 countries around the world.

Richard led the team that created and delivered the innovative ‘Courtauld Commitment’ - the first agreement of its kind between WRAP and UK supermarket retailers and manufacturers committed to collaborating on delivering packaging and food waste reduction. Between 2007 and 2012 this voluntary agreement, together with WRAP’s internationally-renowned Love Food Hate Waste campaign, helped reduce packaging and food waste by more than 3 million tonnes, reducing carbon emissions by over 8 million tonnes. He also led WRAP’s public: private partnerships in hospitality and food service, and home improvement. He negotiated the latest voluntary agreement, Courtauld 2025 and this has helped reduce UK food waste across the supply chain by 27%. Using this experience, his team is now working with partners around the world to reduce food waste and tackle plastic pollution for example in South Africa, Mexico, USA and Indonesia.
