Dr. Schandl holds a PhD in Sociology and an MA in Social and Economic Sciences. He is a Senior Principal Research Scientist and the Circular Economy Lead at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in Canberra, where he coordinates circular economy research initiatives. In addition to his role at CSIRO, he serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Graduate School of Environmental Studies at Nagoya University, Japan. Dr. Schandl is also actively involved in global platforms, including as a member of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) International Resource Panel and an expert member of the UNCRD Regional 3R and Circular Economy Forum for Asia and the Pacific. He is a past president of the International Society of Industrial Ecology. His research focuses on social theory, industrial metabolism, and environmental and sustainability policy, with a strong commitment to promoting evidence-based policies that enhance resource efficiency, minimize waste, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and advance the principles of the circular economy.
