Pep is a Chief Research Scientist in CSIRO Environment and the Executive Director of the Global Carbon Project, a global network of scientists that studies and integrates knowledge of greenhouses gases to understand the evolution of Earth’s biogeochemical cycles and how to manage them to mitigate climate change. He received his BSc, Ms, and PhD degrees on terrestrial ecology from the University Autonomous of Barcelona, Catalonia; after which he spent the 1990s in research positions at San Diego State University, University California at Berkeley, and Stanford University.

Pep’s work focuses on highly integrative and interdisciplinary research on global and regional analyses of trends, drivers and budgets of the sources and sinks of the main greenhouse gases. He also studies the size and vulnerability of earth’s carbon pools, carbon-climate feedbacks, and pathways to stabilize the climate, including nature-based solutions and negative emissions technologies. More recently, he has also focused on abrupt ecosystem changes and collapse due to rapid climate change, including the role of fire. 

Pep has been a contributor to the United Nations - Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for the last 15 years, and to assessments by the World Meteorological Organization. He is a fellow member of the American Geophysical Union, and Reuters named him as the 8th most influential climate scientist in the world in 2021. He has published over 200 research papers, of which over a quarter are in the prestigious journals of Nature/s and Science; edited 14 books and special journal issues. His overall published work has attracted over 90,000 citations (Google Scholar). Pep is also a keen science communicator through his engagement in national and international traditional media, social media, and evidence-based journalism in The Conversation with over 1.5 million reads.
