ON AUSTRALIA'S #WARR-PATH TO A CIRCULAR ECONOMY
A circular economy (CE) is one where we utilise design to eliminate waste and pollution and keep materials at their highest and best value for as long as possible through mimicking natural regenerative systems.
The 2022 Circularity Gap Report estimates that only 8.6% of materials globally are genuinely circular. Global consumption has reached 100 billion tonnes annually, of which 90% is wasted. With 70% of greenhouse gas emissions coming from material management there is an urgent need to transform the way we manage materials, and we can do so by designing differently and establishing systems that support repair, refurbishment, and re-use.
However, doing this requires real change to the way we operate in Australia, where we currently rely heavily on the essential waste and resource recovery (WARR) industry to recycle and re-circulate materials. This is not a circular approach; rather, it is a closed loop model. The 2022 ENVIRO Conference is on the #WARR-path to drive that change - we will explore where the waste management hierarchy intersects with the circular economy, the role that industry, the community and government can play in transitioning Australia at a local, regional, and state level, and how we can become one common market that develops national strategic systems that value and manage materials.
